Netscape Releases Preview 1 of Netscape 6

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

Netscape Communications has released Preview Release 1 of Netscape 6. After many delays, the company decided to bypass the 5 version number completely, and start with 6. This browser is based on the development efforts from (Milestone M15 was used), and includes a new rendering engine which goes by the name Gecko.

Gecko - the rendering engine - is the program that draws out the Web pages on your screen, and a big improvement was made with this new engine. First of all it meets all of the current W3C standards, including HTML 4.0, Cascading Style Sheets Level 1 (CSS1), Document Object Model (DOM), Resource Description Framework (RDF), and XML. Secondly, it's a small engine - it fits on a 1.4MB floppy.

The whole Netscape 6 package is lean. A full download is just over 16MB, as compared to over 29MB for Microsoft's latest Internet Explorer 5.5 beta.

Now before you "rush out" and download Netscape 6, remember that this is only a preview, and as such you should never install it on a mission critical machine. As always: back up before you install!

You can download the (SmartDownload) setup file from the Netscape FTP Site [209KB].

Netscape 6 PR1 is also available as a full download from the Netscape FTP [16.06MB] site.

For more information see the Netscape 6 PR1 Data Sheet.

I hope to post a preview on our Web site in the coming week.
